Crossing the Poverty Line: The Destiny of Sudanese Middle-Class Public Sector Employees
Ibrahim Mohamed G. Sahal
Abstract: The paper intends to study the poverty situation in Urban Sudan and identifies the impact of the poverty situation on the class structure. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative modes of analysis. The data collection tools used are primarily questionnaires. The study findings indicate that the majority of the ‘middle class’ in the public sector (93.8%) are below the poverty line if measured in terms of salaries alone. In addition, based on aggregate income, about 61% of them are below the poverty line, i.e., the ‘new poor’ category. The study recommends that measures be taken to alleviate the problem.
