The Fifteenth International Conference of Ethiopian Studies

The Fifteenth International Conference of Ethiopian Studies took place in Hamburg, Germany, from 21st to 26th July 2003, under the auspices of the Asia-Africa Institute of the University of Hamburg. Nearly 300 scholars attended the triennial conference, presenting papers on various aspects of Ethiopian studies: anthropology, arts, archaeology and history, development and environment, education, language and literature, law and politics, and religion. In addition to parallel panels, there were daily plenary sessions, where presentations were made on the current state of the various disciplines. One of the high points of the conference was the official release of the first volume of Encyclopaedia Aethiopica, also compiled by the Asia-Africa Institute. The encyclopedic work is expected to run into five volumes. At the closing session, it was decided to hold the next conference in Rome, in the year 2006.

Professor Bahru Zewde, Resident Vice-President of OSSREA, took part in the Conference, presenting a paper on the Ethiopian Mission to the Coronation of King George V in 1911. Professor Bahru also used the occasion to disseminate OSSREA literature and to hold discussions with heads of German research institutes on possible areas of future collaboration.
