Applications for the 15th Gender Issues and the 17th Social Science Research Grant Competitions
Announcement for the Seventeenth Social Science and the Fifteenth Gender Issues Research Grant Competitions were made through brochures, posters, newsletter, newspapers, and websites to the eligible individuals in Eastern and Southern Africa. This new initiative resulted in OSSREA receiving a total of 266 applications, which has increased by 111% from that of last year. The relative increase in the number of winners, this year, is 72%. Therefore, the increase in the number of applicants in 2003 is significantly higher than the relative increase in the number of grantees, indicating the huge demand that has not been met through the current increase in the number of grantees.
General Profile of the Applicants
Seventeenth Social Science Research Award Competition
The application deadline for the Seventeenth Social Science Research Award Competition was closed on 31st July 2003. Since the date of announcement of the competition on 1st May 2003, the OSSREA Secretariat received a total of 122 applications. Out of the total applicants, 97 were males, 23 were females and one did not state gender.
The country breakdown of the applicants for the Seventeenth Social Science Competition is: Ethiopia (25), Kenya (43), Lesotho (3), Malawi (4), Somalia (1), South Africa (3), Sudan (5), Tanzania (7), Uganda (17), and Zimbabwe (14).
It is for the first time, in the history of OSSREA, that a significant number of member countries are represented and such a large number of applications received. For example, countries like Somalia had never participated in the activities of OSSREA even during the peacetime; it is interesting that under such a devastating crisis OSSREA is able to attract the attention of scholars of that country.
Fifteenth Gender Issues Research Grant Competition
The announcement and deadline dates for the Fifteenth Gender Issues Research Grant Competition are the same as that of the Seventeenth Social Science Grant Competition.
A total of 144 applications for the Fifteenth Gender Issues Grant Competition were received. The country breakdown of the applicants is: Botswana (5), Ethiopia (25), Kenya (63), Malawi (4), South Africa (3), Swaziland (2), Tanzania (9), Uganda (17) and Zimbabwe (11) and one each from Lesotho, Somalia, Sudan, and Zambia. Out of the total applicants, 66 were males, 77 were females and one did not state gender. The larger number of female applicants compared to males, this year for the first time, shows that the Gender Issues programme has attained its objective of encouraging female young scholars’ participation in researching gender-related issues.
