Screening of Applications for the 14th Gender Issues and the 16th Social Science Research Grant Competitions

The application deadline for the 14th Gender Issues and the 16th Social Science Research Grant Competitions was closed on 30th July 2002. Since the date of announcement of the competitions on 1st May 2002, a total of 78 applications for the Gender Issues Research Grants and 46 applications for the Social Science Grants were received by the OSSREA Secretariat. Table 1 provides details of the applicants by country.

Out of the total of 78 applicants for the Gender Issues Grants, 39 were males and the remaining females. Among the 46 applicants for the Social Science Grants, 36 were males and 10 females.

The juries for the two research competitions met on 26-27 August 2002 at the Safari Lodge Hotel in Nazareth, Ethiopia, to select the most eligible candidates for the grants. The jury for the 14th Gender Issues Competition consisted of Prof. Abel G. Ishumi, from University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Prof. Belay Tegene, from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; and Dr. Balghies Badri, from Ahfad University for Women, Sudan. The jury for the 16th Social Science Competition comprised Prof. Bahru Zewde, Resident Vice-President of OSSREA, from Ethiopia; Prof. Mary N. Getui, from Kenyatta University, Kenya; and Prof. Daniel Silas Tevera, from University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe. The results of the competitions will be announced soon.
