Capacity Building for Social And Gender Analysis in NRM Research for Development

OSSREA organized an ‘Experience Sharing Workshop’ from 11-14 of April 2006 in Addis Ababa, in which six natural resource management researchers participated. The participants were the winners of the grant in OSSREA’s ‘Capacity Building for Social and Gender Analysis in NRM Research for Development’ which is supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. All the six researchers had received monetary grant to address gender and social issues in ongoing NRM research projects. The researchers were expected to integrate social and gender analysis in their respective ongoing Natural Resource Management (NRM) Research projects.

OSSREA organized the workshop to enable the NRM researchers to share experience in the integration of social and gender issues in NRM research, including:

OSSREA had also commissioned information management experts to prepare a user-friendly interactive teaching/learning package. The information to be included in the training material was collected from major information sources in Great Britain. The material, complied on CD-ROM, was sent to the participants of the workshop, and the participants were requested to bring along their feedbacks on the content and use of the resource.

During the workshop, the consultants introduced the resource material and briefed the participants on how to use the resource. Ms. Fiona Flintan, Ms. Elizabeth Mekonnen and Prof. Shibru Tedla served as resource persons and facilitators.

Topic: A Gender Analysis of the Activities and Risks for Potential Exposure to Selected Contaminants among Kirinya Wetland Resource Users in Jinja District, Uganda.

Stella Musiiwa, Carmel Lue Mbizvo and Nyasha Chshakwe IUCN (Zimbabwe)

Topic: Equitable Access and Benefit Sharing in TBNRM. The Southern African Programme for Improved Trans-boundary Natural Resources Management (TBNRM). Focusing on the Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia (ZIMOZA) TBNRM area.

Chimwemwe Mhango-Mawaya and Meya P. Kalindekafe (Malawi)

Topic: Gender Analysis and Access, Control, and Use of Natural resources in Southern Malawi: The Case of Areas Surrounding Lisungwi, Mwanza and Mkulumadzi Rivers.

Dr. Justus Rutaisire, Consolata Kabensa, John K. Okechi, and Pricilla N. Boera (Uganda)

Topic: A Gender Perspective for Dissemination of Breeding Technologies and Production of Wetland Clariid Fishes in Lake Victoria Basin, East Africa.

Girma Abera Jibat, Mathewos Belisa and Hailu Gudeta (Ethiopia)

Topic: Investigating the Role of Gender and Social Analysis in Participatory Potato Technology Promotion and the Related Natural Resources Management in Selected Districts of West Oromiya, Ethiopia.
