OSSREA Signs a New Host Agreement with the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) signed a new host agreement with the Government of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. The signing of the agreement between the two parties took place on 24th May 2006 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Honourable Dr. Tekeda Alemu, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed the agreement on behalf of the Ethiopian Government while Dr. Alfred G. Nhema, Executive Secretary of the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa represented OSSREA.

During the occasion, the two signatories had discussions on issues of mutual interest pertaining to the development of the African continent and the huge potential indigenous organizations, such as OSSREA, have for making pragmatic contributions towards the overall development of countries in the region. The Executive Secretary of OSSREA, Dr. Nhema, explained OSSREA’s mission and objectives, its evolvement from a small organization limited to Eastern Africa to its current position as a prominent organization operating in many countries in the continent. He also outlined the various programmes and projects OSSREA is engaged in and the significant strides the organization has made in bringing social scientists and policy makers closer and in ensuring the utilization of research outputs in policy making.

The Executive Secretary also pointed out the enormous benefit the signing of this agreement holds to OSSREA in facilitating the ground for it to work effectively, and expressed his gratitude to the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for officially granting OSSREA the status as that granted to other international non-governmental organizations of comparable rank located in Ethiopia.

The Honourable State Minister promised to give OSSREA the necessary support that it may need.
