Capacity Building for Gender and Social Analysis in NRM Research for Development

OSSREA is coordinating a project titled’ Capacity Building for Social and Gender Analysis in NRM Research for Development’ for which the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada has provided support to OSSREA. The project has four major components:

  1. Development of conceptual framework and approach towards project implementation;

  2. Availing small grants to NRM researchers in the sub-region to enable them to incorporate social and gender analysis in their on-going NRM research;

  3. Training workshops addressing gender and social analysis in NRM research; and

  4. Production of training materials in gender and social analysis in NRM research.

The support of IDRC was provided in February 2003 for a period of three years. To date the ‘conceptual framework and approach towards project implementation’ has been developed. In addition small grants have been provided to seven NRM researchers in the sub-region, and progress reports on all but one have been received to date. The final portions of the funds are transferred to institutions of six of the researchers. We are awaiting submission of a progress report by the remaining researchers prior to disbursement of the final portion of funds allotted for the project.

After completion of the research supported by the small grants, OSSREA will hold a workshop where research findings will be presented. The proceeds of this workshop will serve as input to lessons learnt, which in turn will be incorporated in the training materials under preparation.

The process of production of the training materials has begun and most of the work has been completed. The main components that are being awaited for are the research outputs from the grantees of small grants.
