Dryland Husbandry Project Workshop in Ethiopia

DHP Ethiopia had its final national workshop in Mekelle University, Mekelle, on 19th May 2004. The President of Mekelle University, Dr. Mitiku Haile, opened the meeting. The Regional Co-ordinator of DHP, Dr. Tegegne Teka, commented on the regional DHP project and on the way forward for DHP Ethiopia. The President and Vice-Presidents of Mekelle University, deans and staff of the University, invited guests and pastoral and agro-pastoral community members attended the meeting. The meeting was organised by Mr. Diress Tsegaye, the Project Manager of DHP Ethiopia.

The workshop discussed the summaries of achievements of the project. Project leaders and the agro-pastoralists that benefited from the project put forward their views on project implementation and the impacts of project activities. The role of government, integrating DHP extension into the Government extension system and how the programme could continue to operate to further achieve positive results in other dryland areas were discussed. Members of local administration at the district and at the zone level explained how they worked with DHP and how it helped the households of the agro-pastoral population. Women also noted the income generation and training they got from DHP. Elders and members in the workshop spoke on behalf of the Aba'ala agro-pastoral community of the benefits of DHP and wanted to continue to work with the project or a programme that had similar objectives. The meeting got good coverage in the national media: radio and TV Ethiopia. Some thirty people attended the meeting.
