IDRC-PLaW Project in Social and Gender Analysis in NRM Research
The IDRC-PLaW supported project titled ‘Capacity building for social and gender analysis in NRM-focused research for development’ was approved in February 2003. The project has the following six elements, all leading to capacity building in Natural Resource Management (NRM) research: (a) managing a ‘Participatory Inception Workshop’; (b) providing research methodology training workshops; (c) designing research methodology training tools; (d) providing small grants for strengthening social and gender analysis in the sub-region, and strengthening interactive networking within the OSSREA family and beyond; (e) facilitating institutional strengthening; and (f) building local capacity by engaging local experts in NRM research management.
The project will last for three years, and at present it is at the initial stage of implementation. The ‘Inception Workshop” was held from 3-6 June 2003. This comprised the first phase of project implementation. In the workshop PLaW partners shared their experience with other PLaW partners and OSSREA. The modality chosen for this process of sharing was ‘ brief presentations on gender/social analysis as they relate to their respective NRM research projects followed by discussion’. A member of a team of each of the participating PLaW-supported project teams made a brief (15-20 minutes) presentation on gender/social analysis within the respective project framework; how the team proposed to address these issues (project proposal); and what was experienced during implementation, i.e., constraints if any, and good examples (success stories).
Participants included Drs. Mohamed Atif Kishk and Abdalla Saber Aly (Egypt); Drs. Yonas Yemishaw, J. J. Ramisch, and Mr. Michael Misiko (Kenya); Ms. Astrid Van Rooij (Uganda); Prof. Sara Feresu and Ms. Carmel Mbizuo (Zimbabwe); Dr. R. De Plaen (IDRC-Canada), Dr. Emebet Mulugeta and Ms. Elizabeth Makonnen (Etiopia Facilitators) and Prof. Shibru Tedla (OSSREA Project Coordinator).
This workshop provided PLaW partners and experts from within IDRC with an opportunity to: (a) discuss the requirements and approaches being used to address gender/social concerns in agricultural and NRM research in the region; (b) discuss best ways and opportunities to respond to such needs; and (c) plan what the OSSREA project could do to start up and support such a response as part of its own responsibilities and general mandate.
