The Dryland Husbandry Project (DHP) Book Launch
National Book Launch of the DHP Uganda
The Dryland Husbandry Project of Uganda launched the book ‘Dryland Husbandry in Uganda – Community Participation in Development’ on 25th November 2005.
Dr. Tegegne Teka, the Regional Co-ordinator of DHP and representing OSSREA , Prof. Sabiiti, who had been the National Co-ordinator and one of the editors of the book, and Mr. Erison Tumussime, the representative of the Kazo agro-pastoralist community, each gave statements on various topics within the general context of the Dryland Husbandry Project.
Close to 75 guests took part in the national book launch. The list of participants included invited professors, researchers, university community members, high ranking government officials, extension agents, representatives of NGOs, the media, as well as representatives of the beneficiaries of Kazo County agro-pastoralists, who were present in large numbers. At the end of the launching ceremony, complimentary copies of the book were distributed to participants.
Regional Book Launch of the Dryland Husbandry Project
OSSREA launched four new books under the Regional Dryland Husbandry Project (DHP). The regional launch of the four Dryland Husbandry books on Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda was held on 16th December 2005, at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya.
Dr. Tegegne Teka, the Regional Project Co-ordinator of DHP, gave some remarks in regard with regional dimensions of the Dryland Husbandry Project. His remarks focused on the objectives and activities of the project, and on impacts and networking among the countries involved in the Project.
Dr. Alfred Nhema, the Executive Secretary of OSSREA made a brief speech tracing the background of the Drylands Husbandry Project and outlining the impacts of the project at the grassroots level. In his remarks on the regional book launch of the four DHP books, the Executive Secretary highlighted the significance of the Dryland Husbandry Project in the 70% to 80% arid lands of north east and east African countries. He also observed that, as DHP worked with pastoralists and agro-pastoralists, as well as with extension agents of government institutions and executives at the decision-making level, its bottom up approach had practically helped the beneficiaries.
The Executive Secretary, on behalf of the African people and those engaged in development activities, thanked Sida/SAREC and the Swedish people for providing the funds for implementation of the project and publication of the four books. He also thanked those involved in the Uganda, Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia Dryland Husbandry Projects for their successful endeavours.
The country-book summaries were presented by Dr. Tafesse Mesfin (on the Ethiopian side) Prof. Hashim Mohamed El Hadi (on the Sudanese side), Prof. Elly Sabiit (on the Ugandan side), and Prof. Nashon Musimba ( on the Kenyan side), respectively.
Representatives of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists of Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya also elaborated on the reactions of the grassroots, and the benefits and impacts of the project in the areas of Kassala, Shihet, Kazo, and Kibuwezi districts.
The Chief Guest of the occasion, Prof. Peter Mbithi, Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Nairobi and who was once a member of the DHP Kenya, recalled the activities he had been involved in as a Veterinarian with the agro-pastoralists in Kibwezi District and, and emphasized the positive impacts and experience the DHP had brought into the project area. He also thanked OSSREA for its inputs, guidance and co-operation, as well as for its facilitation of the regional project which had a lot of impact on the pastoralist communities of east African countries.
Dr. Tegegne Teka was presented with an award of merit for serving as a co-ordinator of the regional Dryland Husbandry Project for 10 years.
The launching occasion was attended by about 100 people made up of members of Nairobi University and Kenyatta University, representatives of NGOs and embassies, and members of the general public.
