The sister organization, CODESRIA, celebrated from 10th –12th December 2003 its 30th Anniversary with a Conference in Dakar, the culmination of a series of conferences that CODESRIA has been holding in the various sub-regions. The Conference, convened under the general theme ‘Intellectuals, Nationalism and the Pan-African Ideal’, brought together a number of scholars from within and outside the continent. It was opened by the Minister of Higher Education, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, representing the President of the Republic of Senegal.

Among the highlights of the plenary sessions were reflections by former Executive Secretaries and the incumbent Executive Secretary of CODESRIA on past achievements and problems as well as future prospects of the Organization. Three prominent scholars and writers delivered keynote addresses and were recognized for their contribution to knowledge. A staff member of the organization was also recognized for long and dedicated service. Other highlights included the launching of The Journal of Higher Education and a session dedicated to the works of Archie Mafeje (who was also recognized for his contribution).

OSSREA was represented on the occasion by its Resident Vice-President, Professor Bahru Zewde, who read a message of solidarity and presented a paper entitled ‘Intellectuals and Soldiers: The Socialist Experiment in the Horn of Africa’.
