Winners of the 2003 Senior Scholars Research Grant Competition

The announcement for the 2003 senior scholars research grant competition was posted in March 2003. Unlike previous years in which the announcement was made through posters, brochures, OSSREA bulletin and the website, this year the research grant was also advertised in the local newspapers of OSSREA member countries. The closing date for submitting applications was 31st August 2003.

As a result of the new strategy of publicizing OSSREA’s activities, the OSSREA Secretariat received a total of 71 applications in 2003. Out of the total applicants, 54 were males, 14 were females and 1 did not state gender. This is an increase of 238% over that of last year. A team of jury members selected 10 grantees for this year in its meeting from 10th - 11th November 2003. The jury members were:

  1. Prof. Gunnar M. Sørbø, Director, Christian Michelesen Institute, Norway;

  2. Prof. Kwame A. Ninsin, Department of Political Science, University of Ghana; and

  3. Prof. Bahru Zewde, Resident Vice President, OSSREA.

A workshop for the winners of the 2003 Senior Scholars Research Grant Competition was held from 11th – 12th December 2003 at the OSSREA headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The purpose of the workshop was to allow the winners to present their revised proposals and for OSSSREA to ensure the incorporation of the comments of the jury members as well as to provide them with further feedback for refining the proposals prior to the signing of the grant agreement. The workshop also aimed at familiarising winners with OSSREA and vice versa and to discuss the terms and conditions indicated in the agreement for receiving the grant. Dr. Alfred G. Nhema, OSSREA’s Executive Secretary, opened the workshop.
