Research Methodology Training Workshop in Social and Gender Analysis in Natural Resource Management
The research methodology training workshop on social and gender analysis in natural resource management was held from 24th November to 6th December 2003, at the Blue Saloon, Ghion Hotel, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) prepared the workshop based on its firm belief in interdisciplinary research to assist development efforts in the continent. The trainees were selected from many applications by a jury through a rigorous and transparent process. The workshop was officially opened by Prof. Bahru Zewde, the OSSREA Resident Vice-President.
In his keynote address, Prof. Bahru gave a brief introduction regarding OSSREA. He mentioned that in the course of events, training in research methodology was found to be important and it was started 4 years ago. OSSREA is gradually growing into a capacity building organization. The training in social and gender analysis in natural resource management was developed in parallel to the one in the social sciences. This shows that the boundary between the two sciences is becoming a fine line and that knowledge is boundless. Prof. Bahru wound up his speech by hoping that the participants would gain some insights into gender and social analysis tools when conducting research in natural resource management.
The training workshop was officially closed on Saturday, 6th December 2003, where the participants were awarded certificates by Dr. Alfred G. Nhema, OSSREA’s Executive Secretary. In his closing remark, Dr. Nhema expressed his delight that, for the first time, OSSREA had organised a research methodology training workshop for natural scientists, which indicates the importance of interdisciplinary research. Dr. Nhema described in brief the different types of grant competitions that OSSREA runs. The Executive Secretary underlined that all these programmes are designed to augment the research efforts of universities and research organisations in the continent. Dr. Nhema reminded the participants that OSSREA looks at them as future trainers of the people, as natural resource management is an important issue in our continent.
