New Executive Secretary for OSSREA
Following
approval by the Executive Committee and endorsement by Congress, Dr Alfred G.
Nhema has been appointed the Executive Secretary of OSSREA with effect from 1st
January 2003. Dr. Nhema was selected from among a number of candidates who had
applied for the post.
Before his appointment to the post of Executive Secretary, Dr Nhema, a national of Zimbabwe, served as the Deputy Executive Secretary of OSSREA from August 2001 up until December 2002. He had taught at Dalhousie University in Canada, Macalester College in the United States and the University of Zimbabwe before joining OSSREA. At the University of Zimbabwe, Dr Nhema was Head of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies for three and a half years, a member of the University Senate and Vice Chairman of the University of Zimbabwe Research Board. While teaching at the University of Zimbabwe, he initiated a number of linkages with other universities in Africa and in the North and actively participated in several research networks. He also served as an external examiner at the University of Dar Es Salaam and Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Nhema has been serving in various capacities in boards at the regional and international levels. Currently, he is the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the International Human Rights Exchange project, a consortium of 14 Southern African and United States universities. He also serves on the advisory boards for the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London and the United Nations University’s Centre for Regional Integration Studies in Bruges, Belgium.
Dr Nhema is the author of a book on democracy in Zimbabwe and has written several articles and monographs on development issues.
