Executive Committee Meeting of Association of African Historians

The second meeting of the Executive Committee of the revitalised Association of African Historians was held in Bamako, Mali, from 10 to 12 March 2002. The meeting heard reports on activities carried out in the different regional branches of the Association and set up a new Scientific Committee and Editorial Committee for the Association’s journal, Afrika Zamani, which is published in Dakar. The President of the Association, Professor Doulaye Konate, reported on efforts being made to secure a building for the Association’s headquarters and to sign a headquarters agreement with the Government of Mali. During an audience given by Madame Konare, spouse of the President of the Republic, to the members of the Executive Committee at the Koulouba Palace, it was agreed to redouble efforts in this direction. Professor Bahru Zewde, Resident Vice-President of OSSREA, participated in the meeting in his capacity as First Vice-President of the Association and reported on the Eastern and Southern Africa History workshop held under the auspices of OSSREA last October.

The meeting also examined and approved the Association’s website as well as a proposal to be submitted for funding concerning the setting up of the Secretariat of the Association. A project for a Colloquium (coinciding with the Fourth Congress of the Association) scheduled for 2004 was also discussed. It was decided to hold both the preparatory meeting and the Colloquium/Congress in Addis Ababa. This Congress is partly designed to prepare African historians to participate in strength at the 20th International Congress of Historical Sciences due to be held in Sydney in 2005.
