Executive Secretary Attends Oxfam-Canada Meeting on Role of Civil Society

At the invitation of Oxfam-Canada, the Executive Secretary took part in a meeting organised to discuss the role of civil society in Africa and its relation to Oxfam-Canada’s work in the continent. The meeting, which was held in Langano, Ethiopia, was attended by Oxfam-Canada’s leading staff in Africa and Canada and a number of other experts. The main objective of the meeting was to provide guidelines for Oxfam-Canada’s future work in Africa.

Two major papers were presented at the meeting: one by Prof. Thandika Mkandawire, and another one by Prof. Goran Hyden. The invited experts, including Dr. Berhanu Nega, Director of Ethiopian Economic Policy Research Institute (Addis Ababa), were made to contextualize to their situations the key issues raised and addressed by the presenters of the papers. On his part, OSSREA’s Executive Secretary was asked to contextualize Prof. Goran Hyden’s presentation titled “Building Civil Society in Africa”.
