Abstract:
Compilation of papers, selected from those presented at OSSREA workshop whose objective was to facilitate the exchange of experience among scholars regarding the status of teaching and research in sociology and anthropology in Eastern African Universities, which highlight the major determinants of the nature, scope and prospects of teaching and research in the two disciplines in the region, viz., the colonial heritage (except Ethiopia); prevailing political perceptions regarding the nation-building requirements of countries in the region; inadequacies of funds and other logistical constraints; and problems related to the quality of students entering the departments of sociology and anthropology. After an introductory chapter that summarizes subsequent ones, the first four chapters deal with issues and problems of teaching in Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda while the remaining four discuss experiences concerning problems of and opportunities for conducting research in Africa as a whole as well as in Kenya and Sudan. The papers are titled –“Teaching of Social Sciences at the Unitlersity of Dar-es-Salaam; The Case for Sociology”,  “The Teaching of Anthropology and Sociology in the Sudan: From Functionalism to the Era of Interdisciplinary Outlook”, “ The Teaching of Anthropology and Sociology in Ethiopia”, “The Teaching of and Research in Industrial Sociology in Makarere University: Problems and Prospects”,” Anthropological and Sociological Research on Development and Social Change in the Sudan”, “The Perceived Role of Anthropological Research and Teaching in Social Change in Kenya”,” Problems of Research in Africa with Special Reference to Sociology”,” A Review of Selected Research Undertaken as Part of the Teaching Programme of the Department of Sociology, University of Nairobi”.
