Abstract: This article is personal view of the author on what chances Africa has in meeting the challenges of achieving structural transformation and sustained and environmentally sustainable development in the 1990s and beyond. The author reviews the problems that are beleaguering the continent and forwards his conclusions. He stresses that African countries should meet the challenges from within through proper management of their resources and through cooperation with one another. In addition, he underscores that the international community has a responsibility towards meeting this end.
