Women's Role in Agricultural Food Production in Kenya: The Case of Siaya District

Abstract: The study attempts to assess the determinants of women’s contributions in different areas of agricultural development. The study uses primary data collected from individual women farmers and women’s groups engaged in small-scale production of food crops in Siaya District of Kenya. The data were collected using questionnaires, which were administered to the sampled farmers. Cross-sectional data for the current year’s output were used. Out of the different factors found to affect women, the major factors affecting participation in women groups were family commitment, awareness, and existence of societies in given areas. At individual level, it was found, it was found that women face various problems in their activities in relation to storage, marketing, availability of water, and transport. The study recommends a need for an integrated approach to development so that agriculture is not treated in isolation from other activities.
