Abstract: The article discusses the search for a tradition for social sciece research in Africa and a vision for the 1990s. It argues that the general failure of African social science to develop a sense of preoccupative autonomy, and chart out new methodological routes and the tools for this drives largely from its preference fo paradigms fashioned by western observers. The author concludes by stating that a recent text on research methods put out by OSSREA is a very useful departure point but that it is only the
