Abstract: The study is concerned with the role of small-scale informal-sector enterprises in promoting both individual and national development. The study focuses on a few selected enterprises where several women entrepreneurs participated in their attempt to generate some income for themselves and their families. The study attempts to find out the types of women enterprises that were economically viable and their relative sizes in terms of types and volume of goods transacted, the characteristics of women entrepreneurs particularly their socio-economic backgrounds, and a survey of some of the factors determining growth and performance of the enterprises. The study used interview schedules, direct observation and open discussion. The study concludes that the success of women entrepreneurs depends on a number of factors. In addition, it states that income earned by women greatly contributes to the maintenance of their families. The study recommends that women be given requisite information and training regarding the informal sector income generating activities through the various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
