The Notion of "Food Self-Sufficient Uganda": A Critical Re-Examination

Nyangabyaki Bazaara

Abstract: The paper examines one of the views on the food situation in Uganda, the view that Uganda has been and continues to be self-sufficient in her food requirements. The paper suggests that from the analysis, the existing empirical knowledge of the food position in Uganda is limited. It recommends for a need for undertaking more empirical research. In addition, it suggests that there is a need for re-examining critically the concepts used in food analysis since there seems to be much confusion around the concepts of ‘food security’, ‘food self-sufficiency’, and ‘subsistence’.
