Cross-Border Trade and Food Security Research in the Horn of Africa

Objectives

  • To estimate the current extent of cross-border trade in the Horn;
  • To identify the role (if any) of cross-border trade in enhancing food security and regional comparative advantage in the border sites;
  • To identify the informal and formal financial arrangements for cross-border trade (especially in livestock) and in what ways cross-border trade generates capital for other activities;
  • To understand how different actors (traders, middlemen, sellers) in the marketing chain manage risks associated with imperfect information, limited credit, unstable market and political conditions, and high and volatile transport costs;
  • To know in what ways social/non-economic variables (informal social networks, ethnicity, and other variables) help actors cope with uncertainty and risk; and
  • To identify the major policy and other constraints inhibiting cross-border trade in the region.
