This is one of OSSREA’s research projects that focus on critical issues currently exerting a substantial drag on the social and economic development of the continent.

Objectives:

  •     Elaborate the post-conflict situation and propose the process of reconstruction vis-à-vis different classes of societies in each country;
  •     Identify the terms and settlements needed to ensure a peaceful continuity of the recovery and development process; and
  •     Identify the kind of programs needed in each country to rehabilitate the repatriated groups, including settlement areas, required assistance, and potential actors in the recovery and development process.

Objectives

  • To estimate the current extent of cross-border trade in the Horn; 
  • To identify the role (if any) of cross-border trade in enhancing food security and regional comparative advantage in the border sites;
  • To identify the informal and formal financial arrangements for cross-border trade (especially in livestock) and in what ways cross-border trade generates capital for other activities;
  • To understand how different actors (traders, middlemen, sellers) in the marketing chain manage risks associated with imperfect information, limited credit, unstable market and political conditions, and high and volatile transport costs;
  • To know in what ways social/non-economic variables (informal social networks, ethnicity, and other variables) help actors cope with uncertainty and risk; and
  • To identify the major policy and other constraints inhibiting cross-border trade in the region.

The Dryland Husbandry Project (DHP) - was initiated in response to the problems of severe drought, famine, deteriorating socio-economic conditions, land degradation, and inappropriate pastoral development policies that contributed to declining standards of living among pastoralists and agro-pastoralists. People in the Horn of Africa lost their resilience to short- as well as long-term natural disasters. Inter- and intra-state conflicts and civil wars have also disrupted agricultural and livestock production. Vast number of displaced people and refugees are distributed across Inter-Governmental Authority in Development (IGAD) member state.
