The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) is a regional research organization whose headquarters is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was founded in 1980 in Nazareth (Ethiopia) by a group of Eastern African social scientists dedicated to fostering and promoting a distinctive African tradition in social science research. OSSREA's membership is currently drawn mostly from 13 countries of Eastern and Southern Africa where it has established its National Chapters.
Since its establishment, OSSREA has made considerable progress in promoting research in the social sciences, publishing and disseminating the research outputs of young and senior scholars based in the region, and promoting dialogue and interaction between social scientists and policy-makers. At a time of dwindling resources in universities of the region, OSSREA has been playing a crucial role in funding vital social science research and promoting horizontal linkages among the region's social scientists.
This report intends to throw some light on the activities that OSSREA undertook in the year 2001 in its continued efforts towards fulfilling its mission.
